Full Backpacks, Full Hearts
By Caroline Morales
For many years, one of the highlights at the end of our 6-week elementary VBS program has been giving each child a brand-new backpack filled with school supplies. Some years this is easier to accomplish than others, but once again, God made it possible—thanks to the generosity of several Houston-area congregations and many generous individuals. While the Walmart cashiers may not be thrilled to see our overflowing carts, it is truly a blessing to hand out these backpacks and supplies to more than 300 children.
At Impact, just like Jesus, we place a strong emphasis on meeting people’s physical needs—like backpacks for school—but our first priority is always their spiritual needs. This summer, every child left VBS with a backpack full of supplies and a heart full of God’s Word. Throughout the 6 weeks, the elementary children learned and recited Psalm 23:4 each day. Our prayer is that as they begin a new school year, they will carry this truth with them: They have nothing to fear because the Lord is with them and will comfort them wherever they go.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who gave financially to the summer and faithfully prayed for our program—thank you for being part of what God is doing and giving all glory to Him. “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” – Psalm 23:4 (NIV)
