A Tribute to Larry

 by Tim Sells

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” – Matthew 25:21

Today we honor the life of Larry—a man without a permanent home, yet full of kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. Though the world gave him little, he gave freely. His wealth was not measured in possessions, but in love, time, and the heart with which he served.

We got to know Larry over the years as he became a regular presence at Impact. We always tried to get him to open up about his past or his situation, but he never would. He was a man of few words, and though he kept much to himself, he had a faithful, steady presence that spoke volumes.  We also had the tremendous joy of baptizing him in recent months.

It was clear that his mental illness played a part in keeping him on the streets. He struggled to access the kind of help that might have changed his circumstances, and there were times we felt helpless—wishing we could do more, but knowing he wasn’t always in a place to receive it.

Still, Larry gave so much of himself. Whether it was setting up chairs before service, sweeping floors after events, organizing clothing for others, or simply offering a warm smile, he was always there—quietly serving, without fanfare or expectation.

One evening stands out: on a hot and humid Houston day, Larry was asked to help move a stranger who couldn’t pay him. He said yes without hesitation. The move started at 4 p.m. and went past 10 p.m.—hard, physical work. But Larry never complained. He worked with joy, as if serving the Lord Himself.

And the next morning? He was back at Impact, early as ever, helping in the clothing room—still smiling, still serving.

Larry’s life reminded us that dignity and compassion don’t come from wealth or status, but from the heart. And his was one of the richest we’ve known. He made an impact not through grand gestures, but by showing up again and again, ready to help, ready to love.

His presence was a blessing. His absence will be deeply felt.

May he now find the peace, warmth, and eternal rest he so richly deserves. Heaven welcomes home a true servant.
