Five Desperate Women
by Jose Luis Martinez
Not long ago, a group of five women came with their small children looking for food. It was a Monday, and they had taken two buses just to get here. We let them know that our food distributions are held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. And sure enough, they came back the very next day—with all of their children again. That day, though, severe storms rolled in and we had to shut down distribution early. After all that time and effort, the deep need to feed their families… and then, once again, leaving empty-handed?

It reminds me of the woman in the Bible who pushed through the crowd just to touch Jesus’ cloak. She was desperate, doing whatever it took to get close to Him—believing that just getting near Him could change everything. Thankfully, we were able to figure out a way to get them food that morning. Two of our ministers even loaded them and their groceries into a van and took them home. The joy and relief on their faces said it all. I really believe they received from Jesus exactly what they came looking for—just like that woman did.
These families were fed. They were treated with dignity. They were loved—just as Jesus would have loved them. And it was made possible because of the generosity, prayers, and service of people like you.
