Thin Spaces

by Jordan Smith

This summer was the first time I have ever had the opportunity to join Impact High School on TREK. The purpose of this trip was to grow as a group, grow closer to God, and hopefully summit Mt. Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado. Before we went up the mountain one of the guides referred to the summit as a “thin space,” a little piece of where heaven meets earth.

For me, however, the thin space was in the journey – climbing up the mountain with a 50-lb pack on my back and hearing Elian and Isiah behind me cheering and encouraging me to keep moving forward. The thin space is in the meals that we shared – cooking under a tarp while getting to talk about the day and the different things that we each experienced.

The thin space was watching high schoolers build relationships with each other, which wouldn’t have happened had they not shared this experience. The thin space was Gretta, waiting behind to make sure that we all finished the journey together.

We did get to summit Mt. Elbert, and the view was absolutely breathtaking. I will never forget that sight, but for me the journey itself was the thin space.
