My Accomplished Friend

by Marilyn Flores

In May Vicky Erlinda Hernandez walked the stage and graduated from the University of Houston Downtown. She is the first one from her family to graduate from college. As she walked the stage I could not help but think of how proud her mom must be. They had made it! Although it was hard and many times it must have felt impossible, she managed to work hard and succeed.

I have never met anybody as brave, dedicated and persistent as Vicky. She works hard and fights for what she wants and there is no stopping her. I’m sure she gets that from her mother, Ms.Genoveva. That lady wakes up early in the morning and goes to work to make sure her daughter has all that she needs. I can’t even begin to explain their relationship, it is amazing how much they love and care for each other. Her mother has been there to support her throughout her life, and Vicky has always made it clear that her accomplishments are also her mother’s accomplishments. Vicky and I met at Impact through my sister Lluvia and have known each other for over ten years. After interning for VBS together for several years and hanging out after church on Sundays our friendship grew  and  she  became  like  my  little sister.

In the last few years I have watched her grow into a young adult and I am so proud of her. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for her, I am sure that she is destined for greatness!

Congratulations Vicky we all love you very much and wish you the best in this new chapter of your life.
